Plain English Advice
You Cannot Identify Asbestos By Sight Alone
A common misconception among homeowners is that asbestos "looks" a certain way. In reality, chrysotile and amosite asbestos fibres were routinely mixed seamlessly into hundreds of standard building products, rendering them completely invisible to the naked eye.
The only definitive, legally recognized method to determine if a material contains asbestos is through polarized light microscopy (PLM) conducted by an IANZ-accredited laboratory. Our testing service handles the entire chain of custody, from safe residential extraction to final lab reporting.
- Safe, localized extraction without cross-contaminating your home
- Clear identification of the exact asbestos type and concentration %
- Detailed risk assessment of the material's current friability state
- Unbiased recommendations on encapsulation versus removal
When Do You Need A Test?
If your property was built before 1990 and you are planning to: install downlights, lift vinyl flooring, replace your roof, demolish an old shed, or remodel a bathroom, you must get an assessment first. Disturbing undocumented asbestos creates a catastrophic health hazard and incurs massive decontamination fines.
Inspection & Survey Options
We offer scalable testing solutions ranging from single-sample identification to fully intrusive pre-demolition site surveys.
Residential Testing
Homeowner Assessment
Comprehensive visual inspection of your property followed by safe, targeted physical sampling of suspected materials like Super Six roofing, textured ceilings, or vinyl flooring.
Pre-Renovation Survey
Contractor Safety
A mandatory intrusive survey required by WorkSafe NZ before any major renovation or demolition of a pre-2000 property. We identify all hidden asbestos risks before work begins.
Express Lab Testing
24-Hour Results
For emergency situations where work has halted due to suspected asbestos discovery. We expedite the chain of custody directly to the lab for priority rush analysis.
Air Air Clearance
Post-Removal Verification
Following a licensed removal, independent air monitors are placed in the property to detect microscopic fibres. Required by law to issue a re-occupation certificate.
How Our Testing Works

You receive a formal report detailing findings and legal recommendations.
Testing & Survey FAQ
While it is technically possible for homeowners to collect their own samples, we heavily advise against it. Disturbing suspected asbestos without proper P3 respiratory protection, H-class vacuums, and encapsulating PVA sprays puts you and your family at severe risk of acute fibre inhalation. Let our trained professionals handle the physical sampling.
Our assessors can usually be on-site within 48 hours of your call. Once the sample is carefully extracted and secured in the chain of custody, it is sent to an independent, IANZ-accredited laboratory. Standard analysis takes 3 to 5 business days, after which we immediately email you the formal results and our recommendations.
Our licensed assessor will walk through the property to identify high-risk materials based on the home's era. They will then don appropriate PPE, lightly mist the sample area to suppress dust, carefully extract a small piece of the material using specialized hand tools, double-bag the sample, seal the extraction point with PVA glue, and decontaminate the area.
Not necessarily. If the asbestos-containing material (ACM) is in good condition, structurally sound, and in an area where it will not be disturbed, the safest management plan is often to leave it alone or formally encapsulate it. However, if the material is flaking, damaged, or in the direct path of upcoming renovations, legal removal is required.
